Introducing new toys

For many animals, the introduction of a new toy can be a scarey thing. They don't know what it is and often times will react with curiosity but also with fear.

If you notice your pet is acting fearful of the new toy, put the toy off to the side and let them see it from a distance.  With parrots, we have found that if you leave it on a table for a day or two, they become accustomed to seeing it.  You can then attach it to the outside of the cage lower down and watch the behavior of your bird.

If they are comfortable with it there, you can gradually move it up a bit each day - it could take up to a week before you get a new toy into the cage but if done slowly for a fearful parrot, this is the best way to do it so that they do not stay fearful of the toy and ignore it because they have no idea what it is.
